5 Common Gas Fire Pit Design Mistakes Pros Make (and How to Avoid Them)

Designing a gas fire pit requires more than great aesthetics. Safety, gas supply, burner selection, and proper ventilation all play a critical role in performance. Even experienced landscapers, hardscapers, and builders can run into issues if these details are missed.

Below are five common gas fire pit design mistakes we see regularly—and how to avoid them to ensure safe operation, strong flame presentation, and satisfied clients.

1. Failing to Properly Vent the Fire Pit

Fire pit ventilation is not optional—it’s required for safety (and by the manufacturers of the components).

All gas fire pits must be vented to allow unburned gas, or potential leaks, to escape. This is especially important with propane fire pits, since propane is heavier than air and can sink and collect inside the fire pit enclosure if not properly vented.

Best practices:

  • Install vents near the bottom of the fire pit structure on opposing sides (always follow manufacturer requirements and local building code
  • Keep vents just above grade
  • Ensure open airflow through the enclosure (don't backfill under the burner pan)

Proper ventilation protects the homeowner and ensures safe gas fire pit operation.

2. Assuming the Gas Supply Is Sufficient

Gas pressure and volume are often overlooked during fire pit design. Larger burners and custom fire pits require adequate gas supply to achieve proper flame height and appearance. Ignition systems can also have specific minimum and maximum gas pressure requirements.

Insufficient gas pressure can result in:

  • Small or weak flames
  • Poor flame coverage
  • Improper ignition system performance
  • Customer dissatisfaction

Always confirm gas line size, distance, and available BTUs before selecting a fire pit burner. Burner performance depends on matching the correct gas supply to the burner design.

3. Not Planning for the Right Ignition System

Ignition systems should be selected early in the design process—not after construction.

Different gas fire pit ignition options may require:

  • Electrical power
  • Control options and mounting locations to be determined
  • Access panels for service

Failing to plan for ignition during site prep can lead to costly tear-outs and delays. Decide on the ignition system before rough-in and run all required utilities ahead of time. Need help with the options? That's what we are here for; simply reach out for expert advice.

4. Choosing the Wrong Burner for the Fire Pit Design

Many pros focus heavily on the fire pit structure and finishes but treat the burner as an afterthought.

The burner directly affects:

  • Flame pattern and size
  • Heat output
  • Overall visual impact

Using a basic ring burner in a large or custom fire pit often results in disappointing flame presentation. Select a burner style and pan size that matches the client’s expectations and the fire pit’s dimensions.

5. Backfilling Under the Burner Pan

There should never be sand, gravel, or stone beneath a gas fire pit burner pan.

The area under the pan must remain open air space to allow gas to dissipate safely. Filling this area traps gas, moisture, can overheat ignition systems, and interferes with proper ventilation.

Correct installation includes:

  • Empty air space below the burner pan
  • Bottom ventilation in the fire pit structure
  • No backfill under the pan

This step is critical for both safety and performance.
